This might have begun from the first bite of the forbidden fruit but we’ve been eating our way through every day since whenever life began. Ever wondered what the world had gone through for you to be able to eat your pizza or a burger without having to go out or stand in a long queue?

It was as early as the monarchical governance in France at the preface of the industrial revolution in Europe. The population was at a rise and exports had just begun at a great scale and the 18th century was at its dusk to give birth to the most revered outdoor activity of the day, dining. France was at its early days of the revolutions and in-fact, a very few households possessed the luxury of a kitchen.

Monsieur Boulanger in 1765 dared to set up the first proper restaurant of the West allowing people to dine at his premises. He offered a variety of dishes with more than one courses and that made his restaurant the first one in recorded history with a varied menu. It wasn’t late until a tribe of practitioners sued the man for allowing ready food to be consumed on-premises, that too for a price.

The Parisians back then continued to have their meals prepared from merchants, having it picked up by themselves or their servants. It was almost at the same time that London too took on the trend where cookshops and kitchens started allowing food to be consumed at their premises.

Until then it was a walk to a series of kitchens and stores to pick roasted meat, another for sauce, some for soup and then bakeries for bread or pastries.

Most of these kitchen guilds would compete to cook and brew for people becoming the original gourmet and wine merchants as well, some allowing people to reheat their food in front of huge fires.

It surely wasn’t a bad idea allowing food to be consumed comfortably with a diner setup, mostly marble tables without a table cover offering more than a single course. Soon, this turned out to be the better option than running to various cookshops to collect various dishes or choose to eat at an inn that offered a no-choice table where food fared only the first ones to come.

Ancient Rome was also recognized to serve hot food to people who couldn’t afford kitchens, this was mostly ready to eat food stored in big clay pots. Even the Aztecs from the 14th century were found to have open-air markets with vendors selling food from huge wood and stone stoves. In a way, this trend probably marked the start of the takeaway concept in history serving fast food, but none offering you variety under one roof until the 18th century.

History would go on to tell you a lot about how people were finally able to consume and eat a good meal in one place.

Comfort and Convenience, the true cannonballs

User convenience and self-created comfort zones are the major factors behind online ordering.

It all happened when comfort and convenience started to play a pivotal role. Home or door-step delivery started to gain attention and recognition. In 1889, King Umberto (Italy) with his queen called upon the owner of a popular tavern to deliver pizzas to the palace. During World War II, the practice of delivering food to war veterans and victims played a major role in keeping the country’s morale sky-high.

Later, in the United States, the restaurants started to lose business with the new takeaway strategy introduced by a few and finally had to adapt themselves to the new situation to keep their business alive.

Start of a new era - Digital Mediums

Mobile apps, Online ordering portals, and other digital mediums impacted the common man’s food habits.

The 1950s recorded the era where food businesses started to advertise food menus on television and modern delivery services were introduced. People started to habituate having food watching their favourites programmes at home instead of dining out. And gradually, the restaurants that delivered food to households experienced higher order volume. Notably, pizzas enjoyed the best of it with a majority of war veterans preferring Italy’s best dish.

1994 witnessed history when Pizza hut delivered their first pizza. Soon it was a wave and in 1999, SeamlessWeb - deliver takeouts from restaurants through a website and mobile app positioning itself as the company that handles the entire online ordering process - was founded in the United States.
